About
About the Snow Day Calculator
A free tool that estimates the chance of a school snow day from the overnight weather forecast, and shows exactly how the number is made.
Why I built this
I built Snow Day Calculator Today to help families plan around winter weather. When snow or ice is in the forecast, students and parents need a quick answer to one question: is school likely to close tomorrow? The answer is usually scattered across weather apps, school websites and the news, often with more detail than a busy family needs. This site brings the useful parts together in one simple page: type your city or ZIP code, and you get an estimate for the next school morning along with the forecast behind it. I hope it helps students and parents plan their mornings, childcare and travel with less worry when the weather changes overnight.

Mission
The night before a winter storm, students, parents and teachers all ask the same question: will school be open tomorrow? This site gives a quick, transparent estimate based on the overnight forecast, with every rule published so you can see how the number is made.
On the calculator page, an animated snowman shows the result at a glance.
Method
The calculator reads the hourly forecast from 6 pm the evening before until 8 am on the next school morning, and adds points for snow, ice, bitter cold and wind. Optional answers about your district, roads and school type scale those points. The result is always kept between 1% and 99%.
Read the full method, with every point value, in How it works.
Data source
Place search and weather forecasts come from Open-Meteo.com, using its Geocoding and Forecast services. The forecast is requested fresh each time you search, and nothing is stored.
Limitations
This site is not official and is not affiliated with any school, district or weather service. Its formula hasn’t been measured against real school closings yet, so its accuracy is unknown. It doesn’t know about holidays, breaks or district policies. Only your school district can say whether school is closed.
